Brief description of study
The research study is being conducted to determine the utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in identifying inflammation of arteries supplying blood to the head, brain, and eyes, which may be useful in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of giant cell arteritis (GCA; temporal arteritis). Study participants are eligible if they either are suspected of having GCA, have a relapsing case of GCA, or have established care and are planning on withdrawing from immunosuppressive therapy due to inactive disease. They must be 50 years or older and have had cranial manifestations related to GCA including: visual symptoms, headache, temporal artery tenderness, jaw claudication, scalp tenderness, or stroke. Participants will be asked to complete an MRI scan within 2 weeks of enrollment and fill out questionnaires. Follow up visits will occur every few months and additional visits may happen if the provider suspects that a relapse has occurred.
