Brief description of study
MS is a life-long disease that can clinically manifest at a wide range of ages. Lesions in the white matter of the brain can be found at any age in MS patients. How these lesions may affect functioning of the brain is an area we aim to explore. Although connections can be drawn between the anatomical structure of certain areas of the brain and how they ultimately function; how white matter lesions affect these structure-function relationships is not as well known.
We aim to investigate how differences in the lesions themselves may play a role in the strength of the structure-function coupling. With an increased understanding of these relationships, we aim to determine whether atypical structure-function coupling could be predictive of disease severity.
Detailed description of study
20 MS patients will undergo 3-Tesla (3T) MRI scanning and physical assessments at Penn. The same imaging protocol will be used for all subjects and will include the most up-to-date MRI scanning approaches. By comparing the results of our study with healthy controls from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) we hope to better understand whether variations in structure-function coupling in the brain are mediated by underlying white matter lesions.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Multiple Sclerosis
-
Age: 18 years - 65 years
-
Gender: All
Individuals may be eligible for this study if they meet the 2017 McDonalds criteria for multiple sclerosis and have been radiologically stable for approximately 6 months.
