Brief description of study

    This research study is being conducted to evaluate a treatment approach that may make the pain or discomfort experienced following surgery less severe and decrease the length of time this pain or discomfort will last. Stress, pain and opioid medication use prior to surgery can make post-operative pain or discomfort more severe, thus the goal of this treatment is to address these factors prior to surgery.

Detailed description of study

     If you decide to enroll with the study, you will then be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. Both treatment groups consist of an initial in person consent and baseline session, then, four other 30-40 minute sessions over the phone where you will be asked about your pain and how you are feeling.  In one treatment group, participants watch an educational video and in the other they complete an online pain management course in the 4-weeks leading up to the operation. In the online pain management course, a researcher checks in with participants as needed, usually weekly, to see how it’s going and work through any hang ups or issues they may have. From start to finish, this occurs throughout a 7-month period. 
     Those who are in the online pain management course earn $50 in total with $10 being earned after initial baseline, $20 after the completion of the online pain management sessions, and $20 after the 6 month follow up phone call. Those who are in the educational video group receive a total payment of $30 with $10 being paid upon completion of baseline assessment, $10 after pre-operation assessment, and $10 after 6 month follow up phone call.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Knee,Arthroplasty
  • Age: 21 years - 99 years
  • Gender: All

Adults age 21+ who have scheduled a total knee arthroplasty in least 4.5 weeks. Able to read and speak English at a 6 grade level or higher proficiency. No pain of malignant origin. No revision of total knee arthroplasty.
