Brief description of study
Patients greater than 18 years of age undergoing a neurosurgical procedure at Penn Medicine will be approached for enrollment. Currently, this study is open only at the HUP and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center locations.
Current research suggests that severe bodily stress caused by surgery may impair the immune system's ability to coordinate activation and suppression of the immune response. Neurological injury following neurotrauma, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and invasive neurosurgery have all been suggested as triggers of abnormal immune activation and loss of coordination. This research aims to investigate and characterize abberations in immune function after primary neurosurgical procedures. Study findings may increase general knowledge about the effects of neurosurgical procedures on the immune system, and therefore can potentially affect future medical education and clinical practice.
